Barcelona ousted from Copa del Rey semifinals
KATHMANDU: Defending champions FC Barcelona crashed out of the Copa del Rey semifinals despite a commanding 3–0 second-leg victory over Atlético Madrid, losing 4–3 on aggregate.
Having suffered a heavy 4–0 defeat in the first leg, Barcelona produced a spirited comeback at home, dominating from the outset.
The breakthrough came in the 29th minute when Lamine Yamal’s precise delivery from the left was converted by 18-year-old Marc Bernal to ignite hopes of an unlikely turnaround.
The hosts doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time after Clément Lenglet fouled Pedri inside the penalty area.
Raphinha calmly slotted home the resulting penalty to reduce the aggregate deficit.
Atlético had chances to halt Barcelona’s momentum. Antoine Griezmann struck the post with a well-worked effort, while Julián Álvarez was denied by goalkeeper Joan García, who produced a crucial save.
With 18 minutes remaining, João Cancelo’s cross found Bernal again, and the youngster made no mistake to complete his brace and put Barcelona within one goal of forcing extra time.
The Catalan side maintained relentless pressure in the closing stages, but Gerard Martín’s late attempt sailed over the bar, sealing their fate.
Despite the defeat on the night, Atlético advanced to the final on aggregate.
Diego Simeone’s men will now face the winner between Real Sociedad and Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey final.
