NC decides to hold general convention on Jan 10–12

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress (NC) has decided to hold its 15th General Convention in Kathmandu on January 10–12, 2026.

A meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee (CWC) held in Sanepa on Monday unanimously endorsed the timetable proposed by Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka, according to NC Spokesperson Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat.

The CWC, which had begun on October 25, was postponed multiple times due to a lack of consensus on the timing of general conventions. Party leaders had proposed as many as three timetables to hold the convention. Some leaders proposed holding a special convention by mid-January. They even submitted signatures of 54% of general convention representatives as required by the party statute to call for the special convention. Similarly, two general secretaries – Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma – as well as the anti-establishment faction led by Dr Shekhar Koirala were adamant on holding the general convention before the House of Representatives (HoR) election scheduled for March 5 so that the party can go before the people with new leadership and new energy. However, leaders close to party President Sher Bahadur Deuba were insisting on holding the convention only after the HoR election, preferably in mid-April.

As internal disagreements over the timing of the general convention pushed the party to the brink of a split, President Deuba intervened and instructed leaders to hold the convention by mid-January.

According to Dr Mahat, the meeting also decided to extend the tenure of the current Central Working Committee until the end of Magh (mid-February 2026). “With the date for the general convention finalized, the proposal for the special convention filed at the party’s central office with signatures of general convention representatives has become automatically redundant,” he added.

As per the general convention calendar, the party will begin its grassroots conventions in the third week of December. Ward-level conventions are scheduled for December 31, 2025, followed by village/municipality conventions on January 1, 2026. Provincial Assembly Committee Constituency Committee conventions will be held on Poush 19 (January 3, 2026).

House of Representatives (HoR) Constituency Conventions are scheduled for January 5 in districts with a single House of Representatives seat and January 6 in districts with multiple HoR seats. Provincial Committee Conventions will be held on January 6–7, 2026.
