‘Laalimaa’ trailer reveals heartbreaking journey of sex workers
KATHMANDU: The trailer for ‘Laalimaa’, a film based on the experiences of more than 3,000 sex workers, has been released.
Running nearly three minutes, the trailer offers a concise glimpse into the film’s storyline and central conflicts.
Starring Roshni Karki, the trailer sensitively portrays her character’s family struggles and the challenges she faces after entering sex work.
It begins with Roshni depicted in a terrified state inside a room and ends with a powerful visual of her struggling inside plastic, symbolizing her entrapment.
Alongside these striking images, the trailer explores her familial pressures, the hardships she endures due to circumstances forcing her into sex work, and her emotional and romantic upheavals.
Director Roshan Miraj appears to use symbolic visuals to convey key aspects of the narrative.
Set to release on March 13, the film also features performances by Shishir Wangdel, Jeevan Bhattarai, Usha Rajak, Sushma Niraula, Sabin Kattel, and Ghanshyam Joshi.
Written and directed by Roshan Miraj, ‘Laalimaa’ is produced by Faith Aastha and Amplify Change, with Reena Lama serving as executive producer.
Director Miraj explained that the film follows Lalima’s difficult journey: “An incident lands Laalimaa’s mother in prison. In trying to free her, Laalimaa is thrust into the harsh, dark side of the city. The story follows how she is forced to survive amid physical and emotional suffering.”
