KATHMANDU: Nepal’s movie theaters will remain closed on March 5 to support the upcoming House of Representatives election and allow staff to cast their votes, according to Gopal Kaji Kayastha, vice chair of the umbrella organization Nepal Film Producers Association.

The association made the official announcement following its Wednesday meeting.

Some theatres have already informed the public through social media that they will suspend operations on election day.

The country’s largest multiplex chain, QFX Cinemas, also issued a notice encouraging its employees to vote, warning that services at certain locations may be affected on March 4 and 6.

The election atmosphere has caused a significant decline in audience turnout over the past few days. Except for “Aa Bata Aama”, few films are drawing viewers, though screenings remain plentiful.

Nepali films currently running include “Aa Bata Aama”, “Kumari”, “Pravasi Jeevan”, and “Rammita Ko Pirati”, while international releases include “O’Romeo”, “Scream 7”, and “Crime 101”.

Post-election, “Lalima” is slated to premiere on March 13, marking the last release of the month. In April, films such as “Haami Teen Bhai”, “Ram Naam Satya”, and “36 Ko Ankada” are scheduled, alongside South Indian film “Toxic” and Bollywood release “Dhurandhar 2” set for March 19.
