Deuba agrees to hold general convention by January 14; Nidhi, Sitaula express dissent

Kathmandu, Nov 30: The Nepali Congress Central Working Committee meeting, which was scheduled for today and had already been caught up in disputes over the General Convention date, has been postponed again. The meeting was pushed back after party president Sher Bahadur Deuba’s discussions with senior leaders at Maharajgunj ended without agreement.
Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel said the meeting has been rescheduled for Monday. Despite Deuba taking the lead in holding talks to settle the ongoing internal dispute over the convention date, the leaders have still not reached a consensus.
Deuba had also called another round of discussions on Saturday. According to party sources, he agreed to hold the General Convention by the end of Poush, which corresponds to January 14, 2026.
The same leaders stated that Deuba prefers a regular General Convention over a Special Convention.
The meeting at Maharajgunj was attended by Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka, leaders Shekhar Koirala, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Bimalendra Nidhi, Ramesh Lekhak, and General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma.
One of the leaders present said, “The president said his view is that there is no need for a Special Convention. He said the regular convention can be held in Mangsir, Poush, or Magh, and urged everyone to move together. Gagan ji said he cannot take responsibility for withdrawing the demand for a Special Convention.”
General Secretary Thapa has been advocating for a Special Convention, arguing that it is necessary in light of the political situation created by the Gen Z protests.
Leaders Ramesh Lekhak, Shekhar Koirala, and General Secretary Bishwo Prakash Sharma argued that holding the regular convention in Poush would be more suitable.
But Bimalendra Nidhi and Krishna Prasad Sitaula stated that a Poush convention is not possible.
Quoting them, one leader said, “Nidhi ji and Sitaula ji said it is not possible to hold it in Poush. It would clash with preparations for the March 4 elections. We need time to select candidates for both the National Assembly and the House of Representatives, for both direct and proportional seats. We need time for that, and for election campaigning.”
Nidhi and Sitaula insisted that the General Convention should only be held after the elections, saying there is not enough time before Poush.
Quoting their stance, another leader added, “We are 90 members who have discussed this thoroughly, and everyone believes the convention should only happen after the elections. We asked for agreement, and if not, we said the decision should move through the process. No agreement was reached today either. Once things did not settle, the meeting scheduled for Sunday had to be postponed.”
