Gen Z activist calls elections ‘meaningless,’ criticizes constitution
KATHMANDU: Gen Z activist Miraj Dhungana has criticized recent elections in Nepal as “meaningless,” claiming they are the sole outcome of the Gen Z protests.
He made the remarks on Thursday during a demonstration at Maitigha Mandala.
Referring to the Gen Z movement of Sept 8–9, Dhungana said the protests achieved little beyond prompting repetitive elections.
He added that while some new leaders now praise the constitution as “excellent,” it urgently needs revision.
Dhungana argued that the problem in Nepal lies not only with individuals but also with the system itself. He warned that the ongoing push for elections ignores the voices of youth and risks dragging the country into endless electoral cycles.
“Not only are the leaders wrong, but the system is flawed too. A chain of endless elections is being promoted, disregarding the youth’s concerns. The constitution also has problems. Some new figures who previously criticized the constitution now claim it is perfect as elections approach, serving their own interests. But our stance remains unchanged. After so much protest, all we have received are meaningless elections. How does this really change our country’s situation? Achieving real solutions is difficult,” he said.
Dhungana further cautioned that the current constitution restricts even those who aim to bring positive change, binding their hands with systemic limitations.
