Prasai says he will meet PM Karki on December 8

Kathmandu, Nov 30: Durga Prasai, leader of the “Campaign to Save the Nation, Nationality, Religion, Culture, and Citizens,” announced he will meet Prime Minister Sushila Karki on December 8. Speaking at a press briefing on Saturday, he said the meeting was scheduled following discussions with Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal on Friday.
Government officials are closely monitoring Prasai’s plans for pre-election protests, fearing potential security issues. A prime ministerial aide said both Karki and Aryal are engaging with him to manage these concerns.
Prasai, who was previously detained for provocative remarks against the prime minister, home minister, and others, was released after a Supreme Court order. He emphasized that his demands represent the public, the nation, and working citizens, not personal interests, and warned of a more forceful campaign if they are ignored. He welcomed the fact that his proposals have reached the prime minister.
His demands cover removing blacklisted individuals and businesses from banks, cooperatives, and microfinance institutions, addressing loan and credit issues, supporting landless squatters, releasing those arrested during September’s Gen Z protests, dropping what he calls false charges, separating banking from other business interests, and raising salaries and benefits for army, police, and civil servants.
On political issues, Prasai called for a referendum on whether Nepal should remain a Hindu state, whether to keep or abolish provinces, and for restoring the monarchy. He warned that elections would be impossible unless these demands are addressed, adding, “If these demands are ignored, holding elections in March—or even the regular 2027 schedule—will not be feasible. The movement will continue until they are met.”
At the press meet, Prasai, a pro-monarchy and pro-Hindu state advocate, also criticised former king Gyanendra Shah and fellow royalists. He said that despite his three-year campaign for the monarchy and Hindu state, the former king stayed inactive and royalists displayed double standards. Prasai questioned why Shah spends time at his Jhapa tea estate instead of supporting the cause, and noted that the former king remained silent when Prasai was arrested for pro-monarchy protests.
