FIFA confident Iran will feature at World Cup despite rising tensions

KATHMANDU: FIFA remains hopeful that Iran will participate in the upcoming World Cup, despite reported concerns within the country’s football federation following recent US military strikes.

Iran is set to play two group-stage matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle after securing qualification for this summer’s tournament. However, the nation’s involvement has come under scrutiny as escalating tensions in the region—triggered by Iran’s retaliatory strikes against a “major” US and Israeli offensive—have cast uncertainty over several sporting events.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Mehdi Taj, Chair of the Iranian Football Federation, told state television that “it is unlikely we can look forward to the World Cup,” while noting that the decision ultimately rests with sports authorities.

Despite these concerns, FIFA officials are reportedly optimistic that the situation will stabilize in time for the Iranian team and its supporters to travel safely to the United States.

Speaking at the International Football Association Board (Ifab) meeting in Wales, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström said, “We will continue to monitor developments closely.”

Iran had earlier considered boycotting the World Cup draw due to rising tensions with the US but eventually participated. Grafström emphasized that FIFA’s priority is ensuring a secure tournament for all teams. “All teams participated in the finals draw in Washington DC, and our focus remains on a safe World Cup. We are in ongoing communication with the three host governments to guarantee everyone’s safety,” he added.
