Kathmandu, January 15

On the occasion of Maghe Sankranti, members of the Magar community living in Kathmandu organised a cultural rally.

The rally was organised by the central committee of the Nepal Magar Association, with the participation of various organisations. Magars residing in the Kathmandu Valley took out the cultural procession on Thursday, marching from Bhrikutimandap to Tundikhel.

Maghe Sankranti is regarded as a special festival among the Magar community, particularly one that honours daughters and sisters. On this day, rituals are performed to worship clan deities.

According to tradition, on the morning of Maghe Sankranti, brothers bathe and, after fasting, worship their lineage deities and ancestors. They then apply tika to their sisters and present gifts along with offerings of cash.

In the Magar community, the gift—prepared by combining yams, fruits, sel roti, vegetables and other food items—is known as Mishra or Nisro, meaning a gift or prasad.

Intending to have the indigenous cultures of the Magar community listed in the Government of Nepal’s national inventory and promote them globally, the Magar Association has also organised an Indigenous Cultural National Festival at Tundikhel.
